DeskI to WebI Conversion Workshop

Workshop Description

trainingThis workshop contains three major parts:

  1. User interface changes: Topics include what has changed in the query panel, how to define a sort, and how to define properties of a cell, a table, a report.
  2. Changed functionality: This part explains the extensions such as linking data providers through merged dimensions, new calculation modes for ranking, the extensions to alerting, and the changed syntax for functions, formulas, and variables.
  3. New functionality: This includes completely new features like data tracking or synchronized drill actions.

Workshop Topics

User Interface

  • Navigating fewer windows. Examples include: creation of a subquery, managing filters, defining a scope of analysis.
  • Query panel
    • Classes, Objects and Filters are placed together
    • Drag and drop multiple objects into the Result Objects window
    • Drag and drop objects from the Result Objects window to the Filters window
    • Tip Text info
    • Result Objects window and Filters window have their own specific icons set
    • Icons to remove all objects from the Result Objects window or Filters window
    • Creation and presentation of the combination of "normal" filters and subqueries
  • Consistency. Examples include priority definition for sorts, alerters and report breaks
  • Defining a scope of analysis
  • Combined queries

Extensions / Improvements to existing features

Small modifications often provide a standard solution in Web Intelligence, where Desktop Intelligence requires a complex workaround.

  • Filter conditions with PROMPT: optional prompts
  • Report filters: AND / OR operators
  • Free style input combined with LOV input for sorts and report filters
  • Copy queries
  • Drill path selection on objects that are defined in multiple hierarchies
  • Change universe in a document
  • Syntax of functions
  • New functions and options (e.g. Percentage, Top/Bottom, IncludeEmpty)

Changed functionality

  • Merged Dimensions: Support for inner and outer joins, improvements over DeskI
  • Ranking: Accumulated totals, accumulated percentages, ranking without definition of a dimension object
  • Synchronised drill: Drill down on multiple report blocks
  • Query drill: Query performance improvements
  • Alerters: Combined conditions, using functions in the result of an alerter, cell or function based alerters

New features

  • Data Tracking: Compare a report with the results of a previous refresh. Use the values from a previous report refresh to define calculations in the current version
  • Instances of a report, scheduling, history
  • Web Intelligence Rich Client: Combine the best of Web Intelligence and Desktop Intelligence in 1 tool
    • Look and feel from Web Intelligence
    • Full feature set of Web Intelligence
    • Working connected, offline or standalone
    • Personal data (for instance ".xls", ".csv", ".txt")
    • Local processing

Managing unavailable features

Some features from Desktop Intelligence remain unavailable in Web Intelligence. The most referenced one is the Grouping icon. With every new release or service pack the number of "missing" items in Web Intelligence decreases. Often workarounds exist to build the same functionality in the current release of Web Intelligence. This is illustrated for the following items:
